I'm a journalist by profession and an animal-activist at heart. I've been involved with the Blue Cross since childhood and this organization started by my father is part of our family. It pains me to see the suffering of these poor creatures on the streets of India. Subsisting on scraps and mostly ignored in the larger scheme of the state of the nation, I hope to bring a voice and rightful decency to their lives. How many of us have felt the tug at our heart seeing a stray cow or dog care for her young and provide a comfort zone in the most squalid surroundings, Here's your chance to join Paws-India and bettering their menial existence.
The Story of Lily
In 2006, Laurel Herman, an American, was in Poona studying Indian medicine, when She saw a hungry mother dog and her three puppies searching for food in a field of garbage. She fed them daily for months trying to find homes for them. When the pups became ill Laurel, desperately searched for veterinary care. Sadly, all of the puppies eventually died. Before Laurel returned to the USA, she hired a temporary caretaker for the mother dog, whom she named Lily. Laurel planned to return to India and fly Lily to Laurel's home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.Back in the USA, Laurel was dismayed when the caretaker suddenly notified her that she planned to put Lily back on the streets. Laurel's frantic efforts to find Lily a safe home led her to Dr. Chinny Krishna, Chairman of Blue Cross of India.Chinny generously agreed to take in the American's dog sight unseen. Tremendously relieved, Laurel arranged for Lily to be flown across India to Chinny and his wife Nanditha. It was love at first sight, as the Krishna's added Lily to their 14 rescued dogs at their home. Lily was so traumatized by her flight that the Krishnas decided to keep her with them. Laurel agreed and Lily is now a happy girl. Lily and her puppies touched Laurel so much that she started a campaign in the USA to help the street dogs of India.
